Dramatic Works

Jane Lambert
Last updated 4 May 2005

Dramatic works include dance and mime and therefore cover operas, ballets and screenplays as well as plays.

There is no definition of a "dramatic work" in s.3 (1) of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. The sub-section states merely that the definition includes a work of dance or mime.

Like a literary work, a dramatic work must be recorded if copyright is to subsist.
